Material Requirements
What is DIN SPEC 91489
Germany’s first standard that sets performance requirements specifically for fire limit blankets used on electric vehicles.
The standard outlines rigorous testing criteria across four main areas:
Thermal Resistance:
Must withstand 700–1 000 °C for approximately 23 minutes, with brief exposure up to 1 300 °C, without holes or failures. Flames may briefly breach (≤ 5 s) but not persist.
Chemical Resistance:
Blanket must maintain integrity when exposed to oils, fuels, brake fluid, battery acid, extinguishing agents, and other harsh chemicals typical in EV fires.
Electrostatic & Electrical Safety:
Must minimize electrostatic discharge risk and avoid any shock hazard during use.
Mechanical Stability:
High tear/cut resistance per DIN EN ISO 13997:
≥ 5 N for basic protection,
≥ 15 N for higher protection.
Loops, seams, eyelets must endure high loads without failure.
Why It Matters
First standard of its kind dedicated to EV fire blankets
Developed collaboratively with automotive, firefighting, and insurance sectors
Provides buyers - fire services, fleet operators, parking facilities—with confidence in performance and suitability
Establishes a benchmark for future EU/UK standards on EV fire safety
Where It Fits
The specifications are product-focused (EV fire blankets only) and do not cover broader incident response
procedures. Best practice still requires integration with extinguishing systems, training, and deployment protocols
DIN advantages
Aligning our fire containment blanket with DIN SPEC 91489 offers major credibility advantages:
- Demonstrates capability to endure extreme heat, chemical exposure, and maintain strength.
- Validates real-world usability with clear labeling and rapid deployment specs.
- Positions our product as certified and trustworthy for EV fire response,
appealing to fire authorities and fleet managers.
